More Than a Building: Restoring Hope and Rebuilding Life in Nahal Oz

How international volunteers and Kumi Israel are helping restore homes, renew community spaces, and bring hope to Kibbutz Nahal Oz, Israel.

Every repaired home tells a story. Every restored space opens the door to new beginnings. And every act of kindness reminds a community that it is not alone.

In Kibbutz Nahal Oz, near the Gaza border in southern Israel, rebuilding is about much more than repairing damaged buildings. It is about restoring the places where everyday life happens where children play, families gather, friendships grow, and communities find strength together.

Following the devastating events of October 7, 2023, the journey toward recovery has required patience, determination, and extraordinary community resilience.

At Kumi Israel (R.A.), we believe that meaningful restoration begins with practical action, compassion, and people willing to stand alongside those facing difficult circumstances.

Throughout 2026, our international volunteers have continued supporting restoration projects in Nahal Oz, transforming damaged and neglected spaces into places of renewed purpose and possibility.

Bringing Community Spaces Back to Life

A strong community needs places where people can connect, share experiences, and enjoy everyday moments together.

Over the past months, Kumi Israel volunteers have worked on restoring outdoor areas, terraces, wooden structures, and community buildings throughout Nahal Oz.

One particularly meaningful project involved installing new wooden flooring at the youth house, improving a gathering space for young people.

It may seem like a simple renovation, but spaces like these play an important role in community life.

They create opportunities for young people to reconnect, build friendships, participate in activities, and experience moments of normality.

Because rebuilding a community also means creating places where life can flourish again.

Rebuilding Homes, One Project at a Time

Beyond community spaces, our volunteers have continued providing hands-on assistance with essential repairs and maintenance throughout the kibbutz. Their work has included:

• Repairing damaged walls and filling cracks.

• Plastering and repainting rooms.

• Restoring wooden structures and repairing roofs.

• Maintaining terraces and outdoor gathering areas.

• Improving homes and shared facilities.

These practical improvements may not always make headlines, but they matter deeply.

A repaired wall, a freshly painted room, or a restored gathering area can make a meaningful difference to the people who use these spaces.

Every completed project represents another step toward restoring comfortable, functional, and welcoming environments.

And behind every project are volunteers who have chosen to give something invaluable: their time, skills, and compassion.

Honoring the Past While Rebuilding the Future

Restoration is not only about preparing for tomorrow. It is also about remembering yesterday.

During one of our projects, volunteers helped restore a memorial sculpture commemorating October 7, carefully cleaning and repainting it.

This meaningful work reminded us that community recovery involves both remembrance and renewal.

Honoring those whose lives were forever changed remains an important part of the journey.

As Nahal Oz continues moving forward, preserving places of remembrance helps ensure that the past is neither forgotten nor separated from the community’s future.

International Volunteers Making a Local Difference

One of the most inspiring aspects of Kumi Israel’s work is seeing people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds come together with a shared purpose.

Our international volunteers bring different experiences and skills, yet they are united by a simple conviction: helping others can make a lasting difference.

Some contribute through construction and maintenance. Others help with practical tasks, teamwork, and everyday support. But their contribution goes beyond physical labor.

It is also found in conversations, shared meals, friendships, and the willingness to show up consistently.

These human connections are an essential part of what makes humanitarian volunteering meaningful.

At Kumi Israel, we believe that service is not measured only by how much work is completed, but also by the dignity, encouragement, and care we bring to those we serve.

Why the Restoration of Nahal Oz Still Matters

Rebuilding after a devastating crisis is not a single project or a short-term effort. It is an ongoing process that requires commitment, resources, and collaboration.

Although important progress has been made, restoration needs remain.

Homes require further attention. Community buildings need ongoing improvements. Outdoor spaces must be maintained, and new practical needs continue to emerge.

Through our work in Nahal Oz, Kumi Israel remains committed to supporting community restoration through volunteer service and practical humanitarian assistance.

Our mission is simple: to help create the conditions in which families and communities can rebuild their everyday lives with dignity and hope.

Be Part of the Restoration: Volunteer, Give, or Share

Together, We Can Restore More Than Buildings

At Kumi Israel, we have witnessed how simple acts of service can bring people together and help restore a sense of possibility.

The work continues, one home, one community space, and one project at a time.

And through it all, we remain guided by a belief at the heart of our mission:

“Those Who Help, Are Never Alone.”

Join us in helping Nahal Oz move forward.

With gratitude,
