Every community has a place where life happens.
A place where birthdays are celebrated, friendships are formed, children grow up, and neighbors become family.
For decades, the old pub in Kibbutz Nahal Oz was that place. It was where families gathered after long days of work, welcomed new neighbors, shared meals, celebrated milestones, and strengthened the bonds that made the kibbutz feel like home.
It wasn’t simply a building.
It was the heart of the community.
Then came the horrific events of October 7.
Like so much of Nahal Oz, the building fell silent. The laughter disappeared. Empty chairs stood where families had once gathered. The place that had brought people together became a painful reminder of everything that had been lost.
But we believed its story wasn’t over.
Rebuilding More Than Walls
When Kum Israel first stepped into the old pub, we didn’t simply see a renovation project.
We saw an opportunity to restore something far deeper than a building.
Together with volunteers from around the world, we cleaned, repaired, painted, rebuilt wooden structures, restored gathering spaces, and breathed new life into a place that had once been the center of community life.
Every brushstroke, every board installed, every nail hammered, and every hour of service carried the same purpose: helping a community begin to gather again.
Because rebuilding after trauma is about far more than repairing walls.
It is about restoring the places where life happens.
A Community Comes Back Together
Today, the transformation is remarkable.
What was once an abandoned and damaged building has become a vibrant community center once again.
Families gather there for meals. Children laugh and play nearby. Volunteers share stories after long days of service. Community meetings fill the rooms once more. New friendships are formed, and old friends reconnect.
Slowly but surely, the rhythms of kibbutz life are returning.
The building is no longer defined by what happened there after October 7.
It is defined by what is happening there today.
Life.
Connection.
Hope.
The Power of Presence
One of the greatest gifts our international volunteers bring is not simply their skills or hard work.
It is their presence.
For the residents of Nahal Oz, seeing people travel from around the world to stand beside them sends a powerful message:
“You are not forgotten. You are not alone. We stand with you.”
Every volunteer who picked up a hammer, painted a wall, built a pergola, prepared a meal, or simply shared a conversation became part of the restoration story.
Through simple acts of service and genuine friendship, they helped create a place where healing could begin.
Looking Ahead
Today, the renovated community center stands as a symbol of Nahal Oz’s resilience.
While challenges remain, this space reminds everyone who walks through its doors that communities can heal, relationships can be rebuilt, and hope can flourish again.
